Panel 79

Sequence 1 (2 of 2)
1.1-3 | Guide: Christopher D. Johnson

A marvelously syncretic object, located at the very center of the Church's earthly power, it features both the pagan mythological and astrological imagery on the ivory tablets ornamenting the wooden chair given to the Pope in the ninth century (#1.1-2) But then Bernini's Baroque altar (#1.3) supports the Chair with statues of the Church's four doctors and envelops it in a magnificent bronze casing. This object, which Warburg suggests in the Tagebuch contains "pagan monsters," thus thematically and, perhaps, stylistically awaits further mediation.
