If read in conventional fashion, the “text” of Panel 70 begins in the upper left corner with #1.1-3, “Orpheus and the Creatures,” c. 1630, ascribed to the Flemish still-life painter Roelant Savery (1576-1639), and proceeds to its conclusion at #18.1 and #18.2 with engravings by the Dutch Crispijn de Passe (1564-1637) of the “Adoration of the Magi,” c. 1600, at the lower right. We may thus take as its opening claim that art, figured by the poet-singer, Orpheus, can tame the (creaturely) passions.
