The focus of most of the images of Panel 70 is the famous tale of the “Rape of Proserpina,” an “ancient” story of uncontrolled action shown in its multiple Baroque afterlives here. Rubens’ well-known “The Rape of Proserpina” (1636-38) (#3) and Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Rape of Proserpina” (c. 1630) (#11) jostle for visibility with works by the lesser-known Flemish and Dutch artists, e.g., a “Rape of Proserpina” by the Flemish artist, Hendrick van Balen (1575-1632), that appears as a detail from Willem van Haecht’s “Apelles Painting Campaspe,” #10.1 and 10.2, and Nicolaes Moeyaert’s “The Rape of Proserpina” (#12).
